When thinking of ways to reduce neighborhood crimes, street lighting is not the first idea that pops up into people’s minds. While street lighting can be a solution to various concerns such as nighttime accidents, pedestrian and cyclist safety, and visibility during storms and fog, it also serves as a deterrent to crimes.
Many studies done by researchers and city governments have proven that proper street lighting is one of the most effective methods to deter criminal activities in residential neighborhoods because of the increased surveillance it offers.
A 2019 study conducted in New York examined the effect that improved lighting had on crimes near public housing. The results of this study determined that crime rate was reduced by more than 1/3. Having proper lighting in neighborhoods discourages criminals who thrive on poorly lit locations to remain anonymous, increasing their risk of being recognized by other individuals or the police.
Improved lighting makes neighborhood residents feel safer by offering greater nighttime visibility and by having a better sense of their surroundings. This in turn, leads to more people feeling comfortable walking at night and having less criminals on the streets.
The NBER, (National Bureau of Economic Research conducted a study published in May 2019 on Reducing Crime Through Environmental Design in which it shows that lighting helped reduce crime by 39% in New York City.
